How to check if you're cited in Google AI Overviews

Pro-tier feature that queries Google's AI Overview for your top keywords and tells you whether your domain is cited. Powered by DataForSEO.

Last updated April 9, 2026

Google AI Overviews are the generated answer boxes that appear above the organic results for ~15% of informational queries. They cite 3–10 source URLs. If your domain is in that list, you're getting free traffic to AI-native users. If it's not, you're invisible on the query no matter how well you rank in the organic blue links below.

VistaCite Pro includes AI Overview presence tracking — every audit automatically checks whether your top keywords trigger an AI Overview and whether your domain is cited.

How it works

  1. Run an audit as a Pro user. You'll see a new phase in the scanner animation: "Checking Google AI Overviews" — this is the slowest step in the pipeline and pushes Pro audit runtime from ~20 seconds (free) to 45-75 seconds (Pro). The extra time is live SERP queries against Google for each target keyword, not our code being slow.
  2. After the 30 standard checks complete, VistaCite extracts up to 5 target keywords from your page (title + H1 + top H2 headings, brand-suffix stripped, generic-heading denylisted).
  3. For each keyword, we query Google's live SERP via DataForSEO to check:
    • Does this query trigger an AI Overview at all?
    • If yes, is your domain in the list of cited sources?
    • Which other domains ARE cited? (so you can see your competition)
  4. Results appear in a new card on the results page right below the Crystal Ball, and in the downloaded .fix_it_plan.md under a new AI Overview Tracking section.

How to read the results

For each keyword you'll see one of four states:

  • CITED (green) — An AI Overview triggers for this query AND your domain is in the cited sources. You're visible.
  • TRIGGERED (amber) — An AI Overview triggers for this query but your domain is NOT cited. You lose to whoever IS cited; check the competing domains list to see who.
  • NO AI OVERVIEW (zinc) — No AI Overview triggers for this query. Could mean the query doesn't get an Overview in general, or that your keyword is too niche. Neither good nor bad.
  • ERROR (rose) — DataForSEO didn't return a clean result. Re-run the audit or try again in a few minutes.

What to do with the results

  • If you're TRIGGERED but not CITED, identify the 1–2 cited domains and audit them with VistaCite. The gap between their score and yours is usually your opportunity map.
  • If you're NO AI OVERVIEW across the board, your keywords are too generic (e.g., single-word topics) or too niche (zero Google AI Overview traffic). Try extracting more specific question-framed keywords from the "This Month" section of your audit and re-running.
  • If you're CITED, you're doing something right. Don't change it — but do check the competing cited domains monthly because Google's AI Overview cast rotates.

The daily quota

Each Pro audit uses up to 5 AI Overview checks, and each Pro user is capped at 50 checks per 24 hours. We cap to control DataForSEO cost — each check is ~$0.002 and without a cap a single user could burn meaningful spend in a day.

If you hit the daily quota mid-audit, the results page will show a note: "Daily quota reached (50 checks) — showing first N keywords." The audit itself still completes; only the AI Overview enrichment stops. The remaining checks auto-resume the next day.

Free tier

Free users see the AI Overview card on their results page but with a lock icon and an "Upgrade to Pro" CTA. The check does NOT run for free users — we don't query DataForSEO at all, to keep the free tier free. The scanner animation still shows the "Checking Google AI Overviews" step so free users know the feature exists (and what they'd get if they upgraded).

Why we use DataForSEO

We could scrape Google ourselves, but:

  • Scraping SERPs is legally gray and technically fragile
  • DataForSEO has a dedicated SERP AI Mode endpoint with structured responses
  • $0.002 per check is cheap enough to pass through without raising Pro pricing

The DataForSEO integration is surgical — we ONLY use their AI Overview endpoint, nothing else. We don't pull backlinks, keyword volumes, domain authority, or historical SERP data. VistaCite is an AI visibility audit tool, not a lite Ahrefs.
